MV Faust is a large ro-ro large car carrier built in 2007 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Wallenius Lines AB, Sweden. It is currently operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.[1] It is one of the largest car carriers in the world.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME) (Korean: 대우조선해양) is the second largest shipbuilder[1] in the world and one of the "Big Three" shipbuilders of South Korea.

On 21 February 2011, the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group (Maersk) ordered 10 large container ships from DSME, each with a capacity of 18,000 containers, surpassing the current record holder; the Mærsk E-class at 15,200 containers.[2] The first is to be delivered in 2014. There is an option of 20 more.[3][4] The new class is called the Triple E class.

On 22 February 2012, a £452 million order was place with DSME for four 37,000 tonne doubled hulled 'MARS' fast fleet tankers by Britain's Ministry of Defence for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The ships will enter service in 2016.[5]

MS Oasis of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship, delivered to her owner, Royal Caribbean International, in October 2009. The first of her class, she was joined by her sister ship MS Allure of the Seas in December 2010.[12] Both vessels cruise the Caribbean from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[13] She set a new record of carrying over 6,000 passengers.[14]

The ship surpassed the Freedom-class cruise ships (also owned by Royal Caribbean) to become the largest cruise ship in the world at that time.[15] She has, however, since been surpassed by Allure of the Seas, which is 50 millimetres (2.0 in) longer, although this difference may have been caused by different temperatures when the measurements were made.

The vessel was ordered in February 2006 and designed under the name "Project Genesis". Her keel was laid down on 12 November 2007 at STX Europe - a subsidiary of the South Korean industrial chaebol STX Corporation - (formerly Aker Yards) in Turku, Finland.[5][17] The company announced that full funding for Oasis of the Seas was secured on 15 April 2009.[18]

The name Oasis of the Seas resulted from a competition held in May 2008.[19]

During the first float-out of the vessel the tugboats that were pulling the ship from its dock failed to control the ship, resulting in the port side of the ship alliding with the dock. This resulted in some cosmetic damage and minor damage to the hull, which was repaired and did not affect the final delivery date of the vessel.[20]

The ship was completed and turned over to Royal Caribbean on 28 October 2009. Two days later, she departed Finland for the United States. While exiting the Baltic Sea, the vessel passed underneath the Great Belt Fixed Link in Denmark on 1 November 2009. The bridge has a clearance of 65 m (213 ft) above the water; Oasis normally has an air draft of 72 m (236 ft). The passage under the bridge was possible due to retraction of the telescoping funnels, and an additional 30 cm (12 in) was gained by the squat effect whereby vessels traveling at speed in a shallow channel will be drawn deeper into the water.[21] Approaching the bridge at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph), the ship passed under it with less than 2 feet (60 cm) of clearance.

Proceeding through the English Channel, Oasis stopped briefly in the Solent so that 300 shipyard workers who were on board doing finishing work could disembark, then left on the way to her intended home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[22] The ship arrived there on 13 November 2009, where tropical plants were installed prior to some introductory trips and her maiden voyage on 5 December 2009.

While Royal Caribbean's chief of captains William S. Wright was in command of the ship's journey across the Atlantic and also for the first few sailings, navigation of Oasis of the Seas is regularly handled by Trym Selvag and Thore Thorolvsen. The ship was featured in an episode of the third season of Mighty Ships,[23] a production of Discovery Channel Canada which aired during the spring of 2011.[24]

Oasis had a minor refit in winter 2011, adding the DreamWorks Experience which allows passengers to interact with characters, such as Shrek, on board the ship. The Oasis-class also now features 3D movies.

In April 2012, Oasis rescued a group of Cuban refugees adrift in the Caribbean Sea. After contacting the coast guard the crew gave them food and water, but after determining that their boat was in immediate danger of sinking decided to bring them aboard. The refugees were dropped off the following day in Cozumel, being handed over to Mexican authorities.

Oasis is scheduled to enter drydock in Spring 2014.

Akamalik Mighty Ships Full Episode

Akamalik is a floating, ultra-modern processing plant and a rugged shrimp boat, all in one sleek package. Fishermen haul in the catch from her gigantic eco-friendly trawling net and send it on conveyers to a pristine below decks processing plant that runs 24 hours a day. The shrimp is sorted, the by-catch removed for separate packaging, and all are boxed and frozen. Sailing the dangerous, ice-choked sea around Greenland, Akamalik is equipped with highly sophisticated radar, scanned continuously, to help her avoid rough seas and icebergs that could sink her. She has ice-breaking capability that allows her to slice her way through the thinner layers. The 85-metre ship has state-of-the-art echo sounders and sonar to find her catch, and catch sensors, tension sensors and a trawl eye to monitor it, ensuring the net doesn't get too full. Maximizing what she can pull in is vital to Akamalik and her largely Greenlandic crew. If she doesn't meet her quotas, or if equipment freezes or breaks and stops the round-the-clock operation, the economy of the whole nation could suffer. The stakes are high as Akamalik sails in freezing January. The lives of the crew are at risk in the treacherous environment of frozen, slippery decks, ice-coated equipment, and dangerous seas. But it's the only livelihood the crew has. And Royal Greenland, the economic flagship their nation depends on, is battling high oil prices and low fish stocks. It's critical that they secure their catch quickly and keep feeding the processing plant that feeds their country.

USS Nimitz (CVN-68) Mighty Ships Full Episode

USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a supercarrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched and commissioned as CVAN-68 but was redesignated CVN 68 (nuclear-powered multimission aircraft carrier) on 30 June 1975 as part of the fleet realignment.

The ship was named for World War II Pacific fleet commander Chester W. Nimitz, who was the navy's third fleet admiral. Unlike all of the subsequent Nimitz class aircraft carriers, Nimitz only uses her namesake's surname as is common for naval officers. She is also the first carrier of her class and the most recent supercarrier in service not to be named for someone who held elected office in the United States.

Nimitz had her homeport at Naval Station Norfolk until 1987, when she was relocated to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Following her Refueling and Complex Overhaul in 2001, her homeport was changed to NAS North Island in San Diego, California. The home port of Nimitz was again moved to Everett, Washington, in 2012. This move is expected to save the Navy $100 million.[3]

Mighty Ships Peace in Africa

Peace in Africa is a diamond-mining ship owned and operated by De Beers in the western coast of South Africa.[11] Built in 1983 as Dock Express 20 for Dock Express Shipping (later Dockwise), the semi-submersible multirole heavy lift vessel was converted to the world's largest cable layer in 1993.[9] In 2005 she was purchased by De Beers, converted to a subsea diamond mining ship by A&P Tyne over the course of 11 months. The ship's new name, Peace in Africa,[6][12] implies that it is providing an alternative to blood diamonds.

Then named Dock Express 20, the ship's keel was laid in 1982 in the Netherlands at Verolme Shipyard Heusden and it was launched the following year. Originally a heavy lift ship, it has an overall length of 169.52 metres (556.2 ft). In terms of width, the ship has a beam of 24.20 metres (79.4 ft). The height from the top of the keel to the main deck, called the moulded depth, is 15 metres (49 ft).[13]

The ship's gross tonnage, a measure of the volume of all its enclosed spaces, is 14,793. Its net tonnage, which measures the volume of the cargo spaces, is 4,437. Its total carrying capacity in terms of weight, is 14,617 long tons deadweight (DWT), the equivalent of approximately 300 adult male sperm whales.[14]

Dock Express 20 was powered by two Stork-Werkspoor 6TM410 four-stroke medium-speed marine diesel engines of 3,128 kW (4,195 hp) apiece. Each engine powered an independent controllable-pitch propeller. This main propulsion system was able to move the ship at 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph). For harbour-maneuvering, the vessel was also fitted with a 625 kW bow thruster. In addition the ship has two 600-kilowatt (800 hp) auxiliary generators to provide shipboard electrical power. When the Dock Express 20 was converted to a dynamically positioned cable ship, she was refitted with three 1,325 kilowatts (1,777 hp) azimuth thrusters to serve as its main propulsion.

Dock Express 20 was originally built to house 24 crewmembers, but that number was more than tripled in the 1993 conversion. In 2007 the ship was converted again to work as a dredger, increasing the gross tonnage to 15,854, and the deadweight tonnage to 7,935 long tons.

Mighty Ships Full Episode Cristobal Colon

Subscribe to US Today!

Cristobal Colon, which forms a part of the huge vessel fleet of the Belgian shipping infrastructure conglomerate Jan De Nul, is the largest and the most high-tech dredger in the world today. At present, the Cristobal Colon forms the flagship of the company's dredging operations.

Features The most important and necessary requirement in any hopper vessel used in the dredging operation is the capacity of its hoppers. The Cristobal Colon ship has a hopper capacity of 46000 square metres which is nearly 40% more than what the Vasco da Gama -- its closest peer offers In addition to the hopper capability, the largest ship has a very high dredging depth of 155 metres. Reaching such a depth is possible because of its technologically powered dredging pumps which are submerged beneath the water surface. These pumps are operated electrically and provide a power of 6,500 kilowatts each (kW) There are two pipes which provide suction for the dredger and which measure 1,300 millimetres in diameter while the pumps to discharge the collected deposits are also operated electrically with a power of 8000 kW each The pipes to carry out the suction can be altered or customised to dredge deposits at three various depths. This facility gives the Cristobal Colon the feasibility to carry out the dredging operation irrespective of the level of deposits in the water The material used to build this largest ship is steel as it is non-corrosive in nature and offers a lightweight movement in the water, enabling the ship to carry out its operations without any problems whatsoever
Specifications The Cristobal Colon measures 223 metres lengthwise, 41 metres breadth wise and has a draught of 15.15 metres It offers a deadweight tonnage of 78,000 tons and has a speed of 18 knots In terms of the accommodation facilities offered, the Cristobal Colon ship can accommodate 46 people

The Colon ship is a one-of-its-kind dredging ship. Given its success, another vessel with such a huge capacity, Liev Eiriksson, has been ordered to be built.
